LG fridge repair in Ottawa and Gatineau

Ctechnician is replacing the fridge compressor

LG refrigerators are among the most popular brands worldwide and in Ottawa, Ontario. Let’s take a look at its common problems.

LG refrigerator fable compressor issue?

The freezer will be around -5°C, and the fresh food compartment will be around +10-15 °C. Unfortunately, it is a common problem related to the LG compressor issue (faulty compressor). Usually, the compressor doesn’t stop working, but it can’t provide sufficient freon pressure. If you open the lower panel at the back of the fridge and touch the compressor, you can feel that it is running and vibrating, but it is very hot. So you can’t keep your hand on it. This description of a faulty compressor is typical for the LG refrigerator. About 80% of low-cooling LG refrigerators have this issue.

The refrigerator compressor doesn't start

The fridge won’t cool at all. Usually, you will hear the “clicks” sounds every few minutes. The usual cause of this problem is a compressor start relay. The compressor will be very hot and won’t vibrate. The technician will check the resistance on the electrical exits of the compressor to verify every motor winding. If the values are normal and there is no short circuit, we need to replace the start relay and try to run the fridge again. If it doesn’t work, the compressor is stuck. That means it’s broken mechanically. Inside the compressor, there is an electric motor and mechanical parts, including pistons, that push freon throughout the cooling system. In this case, we need to replace the compressor and recharge the system. This malfunction is very common among all refrigerator brands.

Evaporation fan malfunction

The LG refrigerator has one or two fans, which could stop running or be noisy. Sometimes the problem is not with the fan but it stops because of ice building in the evaporator.

Defrost system problem

Every refrigerator has a defrost system that heats the frost on the evaporator coil. This frost forms when moisture in the air inside the refrigerator condenses on the cold evaporator tubes. The defrost system consists of a heating element, a defrost control, and an electronic defrost sensor or defrost thermostat. When a part breaks, frost accumulates and covers the evaporator, preventing the cold air from spreading. The freezer temperature will usually be -5 to -10, and the refrigerator temperature will usually be about +15. This is similar to the fable compressor picture, but with a different cause. In this case, the compressor has a normal warm temperature.

Freon leaking problem

If the compressor is the heart of the fridge, freon is its blood, providing its cooling power. The cooling system is sealed, but freon could leak due to small cracks in the tubes or corrosion. When there is a freon deficiency, the refrigerator temperature will drop slowly due to the low system pressure. According to the environmental laws, it is prohibited to charge the cooling system if there is a freon leakage. Freon is a greenhouse gas that damages the Earth’s ozone layer. This is why the cooling system should be checked thoroughly before recharging the freon. The leakage spot should be found and repaired. The old freon shouldn’t be released into the atmosphere; it should be collected and brought to the recuperation.

Attention! High price

The most expensive refrigerator repairs are compressor replacement and freon leakage repair. The price starts at $600 for freon recharging/gas leakage repair, including materials. Compressor replacement costs about $900 for the conventional compressor and is more expensive if you want to install the new inverter compressor. This kind of repair requires special equipment, additional materials such as nitrogen and welding materials, a freon collection device, etc. Only a trained, experienced technician can provide this repair. I suggest checking your fridge’s warranty first. Some LG refrigerators have a 10-year compressor warranty.
